REVIEW - Think Tank #1
"I can't be that bright if I create things that kill people"
Think Tank #1 is Matt Hawkins new title; it's one of those books that only a publisher like Image could put out. Its whip smart, funny, and there isn't a superhero in sight. Think Tank #1 is a great introduction story that really put's a perspective on the main character. There aren't a lot of twists and turns, but the ride is still electrifying.
Writer Matt Hawkins gives us the story of Dr. David Loren; a genius slacker, a smart idiot, a lazy over achiever. He is the Tony Stark for a stark reality. After graduating from Cal-Tech at fourteen, David was scooped up by the government and now works in a DARPA run think tank. There he potters with inventions like mind-reading devices, invisibility suits, and portable EMP bombs. As the issue progresses, it's clear that the weapons he is producing are starting to weigh heavy on his conscience. It all feels a little familiar but by the end of the issue it's evident that Hawkins and Ekedal are taking this story into new territory.
Rahsan Ekedal art is animated and exceptional with its dark, thick outlines. His morose, grey-washed style is absolutely gorgeous. The black and white looks great with its water coloured textures, but could significantly benefit from a full colour treatment. It's a wonder that they didn't pick up a great colourist. Some stories - especially noir - are enhanced by black and white art, In Think Tank however, it looks out of place with its colourful main character and high-tech settings.
The foundations of the story and the main character have great potential; they have been set up for an amazing story going forward. I'm eager to see where this book is by issue #6. Do yourself a favour and add this to your standing order. It's an awesome title that deserves attention.
